Carlos Buenrostro
Founder & General Director | Integrated Subsurface & Energy Specialist
About
Carlos Buenrostro is a reservoir and petroleum engineer and petrophysicist with more than 25 years of international experience transforming subsurface data into field-development, operational, and investment decisions. His career spans conventional and unconventional reservoirs across the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford, deepwater Gulf of America, Mexico, the Middle East, and West Africa.
His experience extends from field operations to technical and executive leadership. Carlos began his career with Schlumberger in wireline, LWD, formation evaluation, and geomechanics, later leading the Geomechanics discipline for West Africa. He subsequently worked on reservoir characterization and simulation at Saudi Aramco and advised operators on unconventional and fractured reservoirs with Quantum Reservoir Impact. As Senior Manager at Fieldwood Energy, he led petrophysics and operations geology supporting complex HPHT, deepwater, and fractured-carbonate developments.
Today, as Founder and General Director of IOPETRO, Carlos leads multidisciplinary teams integrating geology, petrophysics, geomechanics, reservoir engineering, drilling, completions, production, data analytics, and numerical simulation. His focus is turning complex subsurface information into practical development strategies for the oil & gas, geothermal, and mining industries.
Carlos is also an energy entrepreneur. He founded and managed ROCAES, a distributed solar-energy company in Baja California, where he developed technical and commercial capabilities, established strategic supplier relationships with KYOCERA and SMA, and implemented energy-monitoring and economic-analysis workflows to optimize system design and customer investment returns. Through IOPETRO, he is now extending his subsurface expertise into geothermal resource characterization, reservoir modeling, and integrated energy solutions.
Earlier in his career, Carlos conducted research at the Mexican Petroleum Institute, applying neural networks to permeability prediction, and taught Energy Transfer & Thermodynamics at Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM-CEM). His multidisciplinary background combines petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, energy systems, and data-driven subsurface analysis.

Summary of International Experience

Philosophy
My philosophy is to look beyond the boundaries of any individual energy source. Petroleum, natural gas, geothermal, solar, and other energy resources should not always be viewed as competing or isolated solutions. Each has unique strengths, limitations, infrastructure, technologies, and areas of application.
I believe some of the most complex energy challenges can be addressed by thinking beyond traditional boundaries and integrating complementary energy resources, technologies, and disciplines.
This means approaching problems from an energy perspective rather than from the perspective of a particular industry. The knowledge, infrastructure, subsurface expertise, data, and technologies developed by one energy sector can often unlock opportunities in another.
At IOPETRO, this philosophy drives us to connect disciplines that are traditionally treated separately—from petroleum engineering, geoscience, and geothermal systems to solar energy, data analytics, simulation, and emerging technologies.
The future of energy is not necessarily one source replacing another. It is about understanding how different forms of energy can complement each other to create more efficient, reliable, and sustainable solutions.
